ART DESCRIPTION
This is a totally unique collage on paper bag from 2010. Here, Kamen has pasted newsprint words onto the bag. The words are from the Lord’s Prayer, with the central section which reads ‘as is it in’ coming from the prayer’s line ‘On Earth, as it is in Heaven’. The juxtaposition of these small connecting words that make up the prayer, with the painted plaster motifs, suggest that Kamen is examining the personal and collective harm that has been done in the name of religion over the course history, especially in the context of colonialism. Yet, with the plaster motif, Kamen attempts to being a sense of healing or resolution. The emphasis of the word ‘us’, pasted as collage many times here as it is in the prayer, elevates the meaning to a sense of collectively and unity that resides, always, in the human spirit.
