BARRY KAMEN

BACK TO THE LIST

is is it of

75.5 x 56cm From the ‘Is Is It’ series (2006-2011)

ART DESCRIPTION

This piece is a work on paper from the major portraiture series of 2006-11 entitled ‘Is Is It’, a radical exploration into portraiture. This work is an abstract study, which uses many forms such as a semi-circular shape that appears often in his work. The wordplay present in the painting, which uses graphite writing and newspaper collage to depict the words ‘is is it of’, highlights Kamen’s interest in the words that are often overlooked; the small connecting words that say little in themselves but make language possible. They become a language of connection in Kamen’s work; suggesting freedom and limitless opportunity. This work is signed using the adhesive plaster motif that begins to function as a signature from this date on.

These works are also a precursor for some of Kamen’s most creative styling, in which he mixes Tudor imagery such as ruffs, chainmail and other historical pieces of ceremonial clothing with streetwear and couture. Styling from this period can be seen in the influential 'Monarchy in the UK' series, shot by Jamie Morgan, for Arena Homme+ magazine (Fall/Winter 2009).
